What your learner will practice

Preparing for middle-school math. Fifth graders strengthen work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and mathematical expressions.

With rounding in Grade 5, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.

How to solve rounding problems

  1. 1Identify the place you are rounding to.
  2. 2Look at the digit immediately to the right.
  3. 3If that digit is 5 or more, round up; otherwise keep the target digit.
Common mistake to watch for

Remember to replace all smaller place values with zeros.

Helpful teaching idea

Mark the two nearest multiples on a number line.

Invite students to estimate, solve, and explain whether the result is reasonable before showing the answer key.
