What your learner will practice
Building two-digit confidence. Second graders connect place value to addition, subtraction and familiar everyday situations. Encourage grouping into tens and ones.
With mixed operations in Grade 2, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve mixed operations problems
- 1Notice parentheses and multiplication before addition or subtraction when appropriate.
- 2Solve one step at a time and write the intermediate result.
- 3Read the expression again and verify with a different strategy.
Avoid solving strictly left to right when parentheses or multiplication change the order.

Read each question, solve on paper, and then check the answer. The full printable sets below provide 20 new problems each.
- (33 + 21) - 15 = ______ Answer: 39
- (17 + 19) - 4 = ______ Answer: 32
- (21 + 32) - 36 = ______ Answer: 17
- (40 + 31) - 13 = ______ Answer: 58
- (38 + 27) - 8 = ______ Answer: 57
- (45 + 23) - 16 = ______ Answer: 52
Helpful teaching idea
Underline the first operation before calculating.
Try a short warm-up, then have the learner explain one problem with a drawing or written number sentence.
