What your learner will practice
Counting and number sense. First graders use drawings, objects, and number lines to understand small numbers and explain their thinking. Focus on accuracy before speed.
With telling time in Grade 1, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve telling time problems
- 1Read the starting hour and minute.
- 2Add the minutes, exchanging 60 minutes for one hour.
- 3Check the ending time on a clock face or number line.
Remember that after 12:59 comes 1:00.

Move a paper clock’s hands to show the elapsed time.
Use blocks or fingers first. Ask the learner to tell you how they know the answer, not simply to guess.
