What your learner will practice
Preparing for middle-school math. Fifth graders strengthen work with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages and mathematical expressions.
With area & perimeter in Grade 5, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve area & perimeter problems
- 1Label length and width clearly.
- 2Multiply length by width for a rectangle’s area.
- 3Add all four sides, or calculate 2 × (length + width), for perimeter.
Area uses square units; perimeter uses linear units.
Try these six examples
Read each question, solve on paper, and then check the answer. The full printable sets below provide 20 new problems each.
- Rectangle: 10 by 14 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 48 units
- Rectangle: 5 by 12 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 34 units
- Rectangle: 10 by 12 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 44 units
- Rectangle: 8 by 17 units. Find AREA. Answer: 136 square units
- Rectangle: 15 by 6 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 42 units
- Rectangle: 11 by 15 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 52 units
Helpful teaching idea
Trace the edge of a book for perimeter and cover its surface with squares for area.
Invite students to estimate, solve, and explain whether the result is reasonable before showing the answer key.
