Grade 4 Place value Worksheets & Practice

Place value tells you what a digit means based on its position. Discover the strategy, try a few examples, and choose a free printable level.

What your learner will practice

Multi-step thinking. Fourth graders practice larger numbers, fractions, decimals and multi-step reasoning. Encourage estimation as a way to check answers.

With place value in Grade 4, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.

How to solve place value problems

  1. 1Read the whole number from left to right.
  2. 2Identify the digit and its position: ones, tens, hundreds, or higher.
  3. 3Multiply the digit by the value of its place.
Common mistake to watch for

A digit and the value of that digit are not always the same.
