What your learner will practice
Multi-step thinking. Fourth graders practice larger numbers, fractions, decimals and multi-step reasoning. Encourage estimation as a way to check answers.
With area & perimeter in Grade 4, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve area & perimeter problems
- 1Label length and width clearly.
- 2Multiply length by width for a rectangle’s area.
- 3Add all four sides, or calculate 2 × (length + width), for perimeter.
Area uses square units; perimeter uses linear units.
Try these six examples
Read each question, solve on paper, and then check the answer. The full printable sets below provide 20 new problems each.
- Rectangle: 7 by 11 units. Find PERIMETER. Answer: 36 units
- Rectangle: 4 by 11 units. Find AREA. Answer: 44 square units
- Rectangle: 7 by 6 units. Find AREA. Answer: 42 square units
- Rectangle: 8 by 15 units. Find AREA. Answer: 120 square units
- Rectangle: 10 by 7 units. Find AREA. Answer: 70 square units
- Rectangle: 7 by 10 units. Find AREA. Answer: 70 square units
Helpful teaching idea
Trace the edge of a book for perimeter and cover its surface with squares for area.
Ask for a strategy before computation. Show how to check a result with the reverse operation.
