What your learner will practice
Building two-digit confidence. Second graders connect place value to addition, subtraction and familiar everyday situations. Encourage grouping into tens and ones.
With multiplication in Grade 2, the goal is to build understanding and to explain the method, not just get a number. Take breaks and repeat short sessions when needed.
How to solve multiplication problems
- 1Rewrite a multiplication fact as equal groups or repeated addition.
- 2Use familiar facts, arrays, and the distributive property to break harder products apart.
- 3Estimate the product, then check using a related multiplication fact.
Do not add factors when the problem asks for equal groups.

Helpful teaching idea
Build a small array with coins or counters and explain each row.
Try a short warm-up, then have the learner explain one problem with a drawing or written number sentence.
